Yoga has been a part of Deja’s life for over 10 years.  Her practice has helped her grow in the areas of patience, balance, flexibility and mindfulness; both on and off the mat. Yoga inspires her to appreciate valuable moments she shares with those close to her. It  has also helped her to accept and cope with tragic losses in her life.  She has become better equipped to tackle many challenges and hurdles experienced through practice. As a public-school educator with SAISD, she was able to utilize yoga and meditation during brain breaks with students in her middle school classroom. This had a vast impact on classroom management and their ability to retain the information.

Yoga entered her life while studying at The University of Texas at San Antonio. She accepted an invitation by a friend to attend Bikram Yoga.  During the class she was hot, sweaty, and had pushed herself mentally and physically to limits she’d never thought possible. Enjoying this class so much she applied to be a “Karma Cleaner”. This afforded her the opportunity to experience unlimited classes per week in exchange for time helping with the studio. She gained a wealth of knowledge and made meaningful connections with other yogis and employees.

Deja completed her 200 hour Yoga Alliance certified Teacher Training with Yoga Skills School of Kemetic Yoga, under the teachings of Master Yirser Ra Hotep. This style of yoga resonated with her personal beliefs, and pedagogical philosophy. As a result of this connection, she creates sequences that promote exploration and discovery deep inside yourself. She seeks to help others tap into their true essence by nurturing the union of mind, body, and spirit via meditation in motion (aka yoga). Deja gets ultimate joy witnessing the looks of release and peacefulness on the faces of students at the conclusion of classes. It is her hope that you leave Divine Khepera Yoga Studio knowing that a transformation is taking place within.

What is Kemetic Yoga?

Kemetic Yoga™ is a healing and regenerative Yoga system that is characterized by a series of geometrically progressive postures that creates alignment of the spinal column and corrects defects in the skeletal muscular system in order to relieve stress, increase blood circulation, nutrient and oxygen supply to vital body systems, and to allow internal life force energy and cerebral spinal fluid to flow more efficiently and abundantly throughout the entire body.

Kemetic Yoga™ is part of the YogaSkills Method™ of Yoga practice that emphasizes creating conditions through activating the parasympathetic nervous system whereby the body and mind can heal themselves as opposed to extreme gymnastic and contortionist postures that often cause injury and result in useless competitive mindsets that plague the commercial Yoga industry today.

Kemetic Yoga™ emerges from the one of the oldest known civilizations which is ancient Egypt, properly called Kemet, in Northeastern Africa and rivals the evolution of Yoga in India. Kemetic Yoga™ was developed by studying, translating and interpreting the commonly called hieroglyphic texts of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and the images of Yogic postures that are clearly pictured on the walls of the Kemetic temples.

Kemetic Yoga™ is the ancient Egyptian system of Yoga enlightenment based upon the practices of physical movements combined with controlled deep breathing and meditation. The modern version of this ancient system was developed from primary research conducted by Dr. Asar Hapi and Master Yirser Ra Hotep (Elvrid Lawrence) of Chicago during the 1970s.

10 Things to KNow Before a DKY Class

  1. Glance over our class schedule before attending to ensure there have been no cancellations for that class. If you have the time, register online. This is not a requirement rather a courtesy.

  2. Arrive EARLY. Please be sure to show up at least 10 minutes prior to start time. This allows wiggle room to sign in, use the restroom, change clothes, store your belongings, silence your cell phone, etc. If there is a sign on the door stating “Class in Session” this means the door is locked and class has already begun. Please do not knock on the door. Once we start class the door stays shut until finished. To avoid having a trip wasted, please arrive early.

  3. Be kind to yourself. If there is a pose that challenges you, remember there is always tomorrow. Consistent practice will dramatically increase your ability to move deeper into postures. If you feel any discomfort during class, discontinue the pose immediately. If you ever feel dizzy or lightheaded simply sit or lie down on your mat. Breath. listen to your body and have fun.

  4. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water hours, days, weeks before attending class. Eat a light, healthy snack 30-60 min. before class. Practicing on a full belly isn’t comfortable or recommended.

  5. Dress comfortably. Yoga pants or Capri, shorts, t-shirt, tank tops, Jeans and or attire that do not stretch aren’t recommended. Inappropriate attire could prevent motion of your body.

  6. Consult with your physician prior to class if you are feeling ill or have a pre-existing condition you are concerned about.

  7. Don’t hesitate to ask any staff member a question about the practice.

  8. Try to limit the number of times you leave the class setting. Remember, some poses add necessary pressure onto the abdomen that relieve gas. This is normal and natural. Do not be embarrassed.

  9. Limit conversations to a minimum inside the studio as there is an echo which is great for meditation. However, while in practice, even the tiniest of chatter is magnified. During class there is no talking unless we are engaging in a group discussion.

  10. This is YOU time. Revel in all that is YOU. Stay connected with self. Focus on your body. Take a peek at YOURSELF in the mirror. Be prepared and ready for Khepera (transformation).
